Description
Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) was founded in 2018 as a spin-off of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Plasma Science and Fusion Center (PSFC).
CFS is developing magnets which utilize REBCO, a new high temperature superconductor.
CFS has attracted funding from Italian energy company ENI, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, ARPA-E, and others since its founding in 2017.
CFS's strategy is to design and build a prototype toroidal field coil magnet to demonstrate that toroidal field coils can be fabricated with REBCO. They will then build a set of these magnets for the construction of SPARC, a very high field tokamak that is designed to produce net fusion power.
