Technical Meeting on Neutral Beam Injectors for Fusion Facilities

KEY DEADLINES 01 March 2027 Deadline for submission of abstracts through IAEA-INDICO 30 March 2027 Notification of acceptance of abstracts and of assigned awards 09 April 2027 Deadline for submission of application for participation via the InTouch+ platform Neutral Beam Injection (NBI) is one of the principal auxiliary heating and current drive technologies employed in magnetic confinement fusion facilities. It has been successfully deployed on many experimental facilities worldwide and will play a central role in ITER, where high energy neutral beams are required to achieve burning plasma conditions. As fusion research increasingly transitions from experimental facilities toward demonstration, pilot and future fusion power plants, NBI systems face evolving challenges. Future systems will require significantly higher efficiency, availability and reliability while reducing recirculating power and operating costs. Achieving these objectives will require continued advances across the full NBI system, including ion sources, beam acceleration, neutralization, beam transport, power supplies, cryogenic systems, diagnostics, controls and maintenance strategies. Recent progress at national and international facilities, together with growing activities in private fusion companies, has created renewed momentum for innovation in neutral beam technologies. At the same time, increasing industrial involvement in component manufacturing and system integration highlights the need for greater international coordination and knowledge exchange. Objectives The purpose of the event is to provide an international forum to review the current status of neutral beam injection technologies, exchange operational experience and lessons learned, identify key scientific, engineering and industrial challenges for present and future fusion facilities, strengthen collaboration among research organizations, industry and emerging fusion developers, and discuss priorities for future international cooperation. Target Audience The event is intended for scientists, engineers, researchers and industry representatives involved in the design, development, operation and application of neutral beam injection systems for fusion facilities. Participants are expected from research institutes, universities, national laboratories, international organizations, private fusion companies and industrial suppliers engaged in fusion and plasma research and engineering.
