Position Overview:

We are looking for an early-to-mid career Electrical Engineer to join our data acquisition team. In support of the LM26 program, you will develop the signal capture and processing equipment behind our plasma diagnostics, and contribute to diagnostics development, assembly, and maintenance.
You will be part of a dynamic, multi-disciplinary team delivering the control systems, data acquisition pipelines, and electronics that support our experimental operations. The position is primarily on site at General Fusion's facilities in Richmond, BC, and requires flexibility to support experimental campaigns, including occasional shift work and on-call availability for shot operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Write custom software and high-level drivers to control oscilloscopes and other data acquisition instruments
  • Write and maintain automated test suites (unit, integration, regression) for hardware-dependent software
  • Contribute to the design of DAQ systems, spanning signal capture hardware, software, and drivers
  • Maintain, support, and perform hands-on installation of a fleet of data acquisition hardware in the lab.
  • Support shot operations, including troubleshooting and diagnosing hardware and software issues
  • Provide occasional on-call support during experimental campaigns
  • Participate in code review, version control practices, and internal package dependency management
  • Contribute to establishing and improving software packaging and release practices for internal tools
  • Document hardware configurations, software interfaces, and lab procedures to support internal knowledge sharing

Relevant Skills and Experience:

Required

  • Degree in Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent from a recognized post-secondary institute
  • 1-2 years of relevant working experience
  • Working proficiency with Python
  • Familiarity with Object-Oriented Design and scalable design
  • Familiarity with version control and writing maintainable, testable code
  • Experience developing software and/or drivers that interface with test and measurement instrumentation
  • Hands-on experience testing and optimizing instrumentation
  • Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot hardware and software issues in a lab or operational setting
  • Flexibility to adapt to a rapidly advancing and evolving work environment
  • Working knowledge of Office 365, Microsoft Teams, Slack and SharePoint (or comparable software)
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively
  • Commitment to safe work practices in a lab or R&D environment
  • Self-motivated, takes initiative, and follows through on assigned tasks
  • Growth mentality and willingness to learn

Preferred

  • Registration with EGBC or eligibility for registration
  • Experience or background in optics
  • Experience integrating data processing or DAQ equipment with control systems (LabVIEW, industrial PLC, or other)
  • Familiarity with communication protocols (e.g., SCPI, TCP/IP, GPIB, USB, serial/UART, RS232)
  • Familiarity with C and C++ programming
  • Experience designing electronics for high-speed analog signal acquisition
  • Experience supporting experimental or shot-based operations

The typical hiring range for this position is $72,000 – 88,000. General Fusion considers many factors when determining total compensation including job specific or highly specialized knowledge, skills and experience, proficiency, job location and internal equity
