Position Overview:
The Mechanical Engineer will be part of the Liner Production Operations team responsible for producing one of the key components for General Fusion’s LM26 project. The successful applicant will be someone who wants to get out from behind the desk and work hands-on in a fast paced and constantly evolving workplace. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated Mechanical Engineer looking to gain extensive practical engineering skills and experience in a supportive and collaborative environment.
Responsibilities:
- Operate custom casting and machining equipment in support of the LM26 project
- Design, build, commission, and operate components and assemblies that improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the various mechanical/pneumatic/electrical systems
- On-going analysis of past experiments to understand how changes impact machine performance. Use that understanding to make recommendations to improve future performance
- Update the various CAD designs of the process, equipment, and as-built models
- Mechanical design for engineering challenges which require out-of-the-box thinking and novel concepts, including analytical calculations and FEA as required to validate designs
- Documenting design details, test plans, and experimental results
- Contributing to the growth of the team by actively participating in ideation, troubleshooting and problem-solving discussions
- Proactively contributing to a great work environment while championing safe work practices
- Due to the operational aspect of this role, evening and weekend shifts will be required on occasion.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or engineering physics (with mechanical specialization)
- Minimum 2 years’ relevant post-graduation experience
- Good knowledge of engineering and physics fundamentals, including statics and dynamics, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics
- Experience in designing, building and operating prototypes in an R&D or small volume production setting
- Mechanical aptitude with a strong desire to work hands-on with the components of the design, including prototyping, operating, analyzing, and iterating
- Genuine passion for mechanical design, solving problems, and making things work
- Proven ability to work independently, take initiative, and drive the success of individual projects from start to finish, including collaboration and integration with other teams and systems
- Good understanding of materials and fabrication methods
- Knowledge of GD&T and the implications of tolerancing on parts and assemblies
Preferred:
- Experience directing the work of technicians and support staff responsible for assembling and operating equipment
- Experience working with lithium or other alkali metals
- Experience working with low voltage AC and DC electrical systems
- Registration with EGBC as a Professional Engineer, or on-track to complete registration
- Working knowledge of SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM
The typical hiring range for this position is $78,000 - $95,000. General Fusion considers many factors when determining total compensation, including job-specific or highly specialized knowledge, skills and experience, proficiency, job location and internal equity.
