Senior Plasma Experimentalist

We are continuously interested in connecting with people who want to be part of the long-term journey of developing advanced experimental and plasma science capabilities. Could this be you?

As our experimental programs and technology continue to evolve, we are building competence across several areas within experimental physics, plasma diagnostics, scientific computing, and data analysis. We welcome people from a broad range of backgrounds who are excited about contributing to challenging scientific and technical problems in a collaborative and hands-on environment. This senior position is aimed at experienced physicists who can take technical ownership of experimental campaigns and help guide the scientific direction of the team.

Your role as a Senior Plasma Experimentalist
In this role you will help shape how we design and implement our scientific experiments and our data analysis strategy. You will work closely with other physicists and data analysts, diagnostics system developers, as well as the theory and simulation group. In this senior role, you will also help set technical direction, mentor less experienced colleagues, and represent the experimental program in strategic discussions.

You will participate as a subject matter expert during experimental campaigns and advise on the direction of diagnostics development, experimental strategies and data analysis methods. As a person you are a team player, self-driven, service-minded and hands-on. You should enjoy a dynamic work environment within a fast-growing organization entering the global arena.

Knowledge, skills and experience
We believe you will be a good fit if you have a background with some of the following:

Core experience:

  • Extensive hands-on experience and expertise in experiment design, physics data analysis method development, implementation and use, ranging from simple methods, to underlying physics or detector theory and simulation, to the analysis of experimental signatures.
  • Several years of relevant experience, with a demonstrated ability to work independently and take technical ownership of experimental problems.
  • Experience with linear plasma devices.

Additional valuable experience:

  • PhD in plasma physics, experimental physics, or related field with a track record of scientific publications.
  • Knowledge and experience of plasma or data analysis software design and implementation.
  • Hands-on experience with experimental physics experiment design.
  • Experience working in fast-paced, collaborative experimental environments.
  • Experience mentoring or guiding junior researchers or engineers.

Example areas we are interested in:

  • Interchange and other instabilities, transport processes, heating and fueling, and other relevant physics.
  • Linear plasma devices / mirror machines and cusps, including diagnostics and operation.
  • Tomography, Interferometry, Spectroscopy, Image analysis, probes and particle detection techniques, and diagnostic calibration procedures.
  • Plasma-material interactions, including diagnostic degradation, plasma-wall interactions, wall conditioning, material erosion, and deposition.
  • Time series analysis, spectral analysis and filtering methods, correlation techniques, and statistical analysis.
  • Modelling plasma physics phenomena, numerical and simulation methods, and experience with common code packages.
