Your role in the mission:
The Electrical Engineer – PLC Control will design, develop, and implement PLC-based control systems and associated electrical hardware for our advanced stellarator technologies. This role emphasizes control panel design, field instrumentation integration, and production of electrical design documentation to support highly complex scientific equipment.
The successful candidate will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure reliable, safe, and maintainable control system hardware supporting fusion system components.
- Design and develop PLC-based control systems, including hardware selection, I/O architecture, and panel integration
- Create detailed loop diagrams, wiring diagrams, and interconnection diagrams for instrumentation and control systems
- Develop control panel/cabinet layouts, including component placement, power distribution, and thermal considerations
- Specify and integrate field instrumentation (sensors, transmitters, valves, actuators) with PLC systems
- Produce and maintain electrical design packages, including schematics, cable schedules, BOMs, and installation details
- Support hardware installation, checkout, and commissioning of control systems and instrumentation
- Collaborate with technicians and engineers to ensure accurate panel builds and field wiring implementation
- Perform I/O checkout, loop checks, and system validation testing
- Troubleshoot hardware, wiring, and instrumentation issues during development and operations
- Ensure designs meet safety, reliability, and regulatory requirements for nuclear/fusion environments
- Support integration of control hardware with higher-level control and data systems (SCADA/DCS as applicable)
What you’ll need:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or related field
- 5+ years of experience in industrial control systems, PLC-based automation, or instrumentation design
- Strong experience designing electrical schematics, loop diagrams, and wiring diagrams
- Experience with control panel and cabinet layout/design (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, or similar tools)
- Hands-on experience with PLC hardware platforms (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens, etc.)
- Familiarity with industrial instrumentation (pressure, temperature, flow, vacuum, etc.) and signal standards (4–20 mA, HART, digital I/O)
- Experience supporting field installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting
- Ability to interpret and generate technical documentation and electrical design packages
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on hardware-level diagnostics
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary engineering environment
