About You

As a Senior Electrical Engineer at StandardX, you'll lead the electrical design & build of a novel compact particle accelerator and the facility around it. You'll own the electrical infrastructure, power distribution, equipment integration, cable sizing, protection, earthing, and more, from early concepts through to operation.

This is a practical senior role for someone who has delivered systems end-to-end, not just specified them. You'll be as comfortable troubleshooting hands-on on the plant floor, as you are leading design reviews or managing vendor engagements.

You will be working alongside our mechanical, nuclear, controls, and RF specialists, and will have a genuine opportunity to broaden into adjacent disciplines, contribute, and build expertise across the whole technology stack.

About StandardX

There is infrastructure that defines eras. The steam engine made the industrial world possible. The internet created an economy. StandardX is building the next one.

Some of the most essential materials on Earth are also the rarest. Isotopes are the invisible backbone of modern life: curing cancer, keeping industrial systems resilient and fuelling the fusion reactors that will power the next century. Yet the infrastructure that produces them is ageing, fragmented and increasingly unable to keep up with demand.

We're a world-class team of nuclear engineers, deep tech operators and doctoral-level scientists building the UK's first isotope refinery: a single proprietary platform, deployable anywhere, producing the full portfolio of critical isotopes at scale, turning chronic scarcity into abundance.

Exceptional team. Massive problem. If you want to work on something that matters, really matters, this is it.

Key Objectives

  • Lead the design, development and integration of electrical systems across the facility.
  • Own electrical installation, testing, commissioning and fault diagnosis, ensuring safe, compliant and timely handover to operations.
  • Act as the technical authority for electrical safety, EMC, standards compliance and design quality across the facility.
  • Develop working knowledge of controls, diagnostics and RF, supporting integration across the full EC&I scope.

Your Responsibilities

1️⃣ Electrical Architecture & Design

  • Develop robust electrical architectures covering the incoming supply, HV/LV distribution, power conversion, protection, isolation, control and monitoring.
  • Carry out electrical load analysis, power budgets, cable sizing, voltage drop, fault level and discrimination studies, and component selection.
  • Design and implement earthing, bonding, shielding, lightning and surge protection systems, managing EMC across sensitive accelerator systems.
  • Specify and design enclosures, switchgear, cable assemblies, connectors and containment in line with evolving facility requirements.

2️⃣ Documentation & Design Assurance

  • Produce SLDs, schematics, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, termination drawings, interface definitions and bills of materials.
  • Produce installation documentation, test plans, specifications and engineering reports.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant codes and standards (BS 7671, BS EN 60204-1, BS EN 61439, BS EN 62271, CDM, EHSRs etc.) throughout the project lifecycle.

3️⃣ Integration, Commissioning & Troubleshooting

  • Support integration of in-house and third-party equipment across the machine subsystems and adjacent test cells and experiments.
  • Lead electrical installation, inspection, testing, commissioning and start-up, and supervise contractors and technicians on site.
  • Lead hands-on fault-finding, root-cause analysis and corrective engineering.

4️⃣ People & Pace

  • Mentor graduate and junior engineers across disciplines, and help build the team's design guides, templates and procedures.
  • Bring pragmatic structure to fast-moving scope, balancing rigour with speed.
  • Work closely with controls, RF, mechanical, physics and nuclear colleagues, giving clear technical advice and engineering recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Requirements

  • BEng/MEng or equivalent in Electrical, Electrical & Electronic, Power Systems Engineering or a related discipline
  • Extensive experience in electrical systems design, integration, development or delivery
  • Experience with complex electrical systems in nuclear, R&D, energy, defence, aerospace, industrial or related sectors
  • Strong understanding of AC and DC power systems, HV and LV distribution, protection, isolation, earthing and bonding
  • Solid working knowledge of BS 7671 as applied to industrial installations, and related machinery and switchgear standards
  • Experience producing and reviewing schematics, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, interface documentation and bills of materials
  • Practical experience designing and integrating control panels, enclosures, cable assemblies and power distribution solutions
  • Track record of successfully leading electrical installation and commissioning works
  • Willingness to work on-site full-time in London

Ideal Experience

  • Extensive experience in accelerator, nuclear, medical isotope, high-energy physics or fusion environments
  • Electrical design to EA/IRR requirements
  • Greenfield experience, taking a facility from design through construction to start-up
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer, or working towards it
  • Exposure to high-voltage, pulsed power or power electronics systems
  • Experience applying EMC, grounding and shielding requirements in noise-sensitive systems
  • Familiarity with PLCs, SCADA, instrumentation and functional safety
  • ECAD and/or power system analysis software experience (e.g. EPLAN, ETAP)
  • Experience supporting prototype builds or low-volume manufacture
