About Us:
Established in 2002, General Fusion is a global leader in the race to commercialize clean fusion energy. We are pursuing a uniquely practical approach, Magnetized Target Fusion, and aim to provide zero-carbon fusion power to the grid in the early to mid-2030s. Today at our state-of-the-art labs in Richmond, BC, we’re operating a groundbreaking fusion demonstration machine called Lawson Machine 26 (LM26), designed to achieve transformational technical milestones and accelerate General Fusion’s technology to commercialization. Our path to market is funded by a global syndicate of leading energy venture capital firms, industry leaders, and technology pioneers. Learn more at .
Position Overview:
General Fusion is seeking a Senior Electronics Engineer to join our Controls & Electronics team. This team designs and supports the data acquisition, instrumentation, and control electronics used in the operation of LM26. Measurements taken during machine operation occur in the presence of large pulsed currents and voltages, and their quality directly determines what the physics and engineering teams can conclude from each experiment. This position is the senior technical lead for the electronics group within the team. The successful candidate will set design standards, lead design reviews, resolve difficult signal- and system-level problems encountered during operations, and mentor other engineers. The role is primarily technical, with opportunities for expanded leadership scope as the team grows. Success in this role includes quickly implementing solutions for needs with incomplete requirements and supporting those solutions throughout their lifetime during lab operations as requirements change.
The position reports to the Manager, Pulsed Power Systems, and is located on site at General Fusion’s Richmond, BC facility. Shift work is not expected; however, extended hours during experimental campaigns and troubleshooting activities are a regular part of this role.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as the electronics group's technical authority on analog and digital design, signal integrity, and measurement methodology.
- Architect, design, and commission signal chains (sensor interface, conditioning, isolation, digitization, and transmission) that deliver reliable measurements in an electrically noisy, high-voltage, pulsed-power environment.
- Troubleshoot and characterize instrumentation performance in the lab during experimental operations, distinguishing real signals from noise, coupling, ringing, and other measurement artifacts.
- Define and maintain grounding, shielding, and isolation practices for the team, including fibre-optic and galvanically isolated links.
- Own the hardware development lifecycle from requirements through schematic design, PCB layout, prototyping, test, and release. Lead design reviews and establish review standards for schematics, layouts, and test plans.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers on the team, including at the bench and through design reviews.
- Gather and translate requirements from physics, mechanical, electrical, and software stakeholders into supportable electronic solutions, and make design decisions where requirements are incomplete or changing.
- Document designs, calibration procedures, and test results so that systems are maintainable and repeatable across the team.
- Champion a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with applicable electrical, machine safety, and lab safety standards.
Skills and Experience
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or equivalent.
- 10+ years of progressive experience designing, deploying, and commissioning electronic systems in R&D, scientific, or industrial environments.
- Demonstrated experience maintaining measurement integrity in electrically hostile environments, including practical application of grounding, shielding, isolation, and common-mode rejection techniques.
- Expertise in analog signal conditioning and high-speed digitization, including amplification, filtering, anti-aliasing, ADC selection, and sampling and timing trade-offs.
- Experience providing technical leadership, such as leading design reviews, setting design standards, or mentoring other engineers.
- Ability to commit to a design direction with incomplete information and revise as test data becomes available.
- Proficiency with schematic capture and PCB layout tools (Altium preferred) and circuit simulation (LTSpice or equivalent).
- Clear technical documentation and communication skills, including presenting design decisions to multidisciplinary audiences.
- Commitment to safe work practices in a lab or R&D environment.
Preferred
- Experience in fusion, high-energy physics, particle accelerator, pulsed power, or similar research facilities.
- Familiarity with high-voltage and high-current measurement techniques (resistive and capacitive dividers, Rogowski and Pearson coils, current transformers) and their bandwidth and calibration limitations.
- Experience with fibre-optic signal links and low-noise front-end design.
- Experience with LabVIEW and data acquisition hardware.
- Experience with industrial control systems and PLCs; familiarity with Beckhoff TwinCAT is an asset.
- Proficiency with general-purpose programming languages (Python, C, C++) for test automation and data analysis.
- Experience supervising or managing engineers.
- Master’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with EGBC, or eligibility for registration.
The typical hiring range for this position is $140,000 - $170,000. General Fusion considers many factors when determining total compensation including job specific or highly specialized knowledge, skills and experience, proficiency, job location and internal equity
