The impact you will make
As Mechanical Engineer – Diagnostics, you will develop precision mechanical systems and devices used in advanced laser and fusion experiments, from initial concept through installation and commissioning.
You will translate scientific and diagnostic requirements into manufacturable, reliable designs and take hands-on ownership of drawings, supplier follow-up, assembly, alignment, testing, and troubleshooting.
Your responsibilities
- Design and develop precision mechanical components, assemblies, fixtures, and positioning systems for optical and experimental diagnostics.
- Create and maintain 3D CAD models, detailed manufacturing drawings, assembly drawings, bills of materials, and technical documentation, including GD&T and tolerance analyses.
- Select suitable materials, components, fabrication processes, and suppliers with attention to precision, cleanliness, vacuum compatibility, thermal stability, and vibration where required.
- Coordinate manufacturing and procurement, review supplier drawings and quotations, resolve fabrication issues, and inspect delivered components against specifications.
- Plan and perform mechanical assembly, alignment, integration, and functional testing of diagnostic equipment in laboratories and experimental facilities.
- Support on-site installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and design improvements in close cooperation with scientists, electrical engineers, and controls teams.
- Maintain configuration control, design revisions, verification records, and clear technical handover documentation.
What you bring
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Precision Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Practical experience designing and delivering precision mechanical devices, instruments, or optomechanical assemblies.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD and production drawings (preferably Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks), including GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, and design for manufacturing and assembly.
- Understanding of machining, fabrication, materials, fasteners, bearings, alignment methods, and metrology.
- Hands-on experience supporting manufacturing, mechanical assembly, testing, installation, or commissioning.
- Ability to communicate technical requirements and coordinate effectively with suppliers and multidisciplinary teams.
What sets you apart
- Experience with scientific diagnostics, optical instruments, laser facilities, beamlines, or experimental physics equipment.
- Experience designing for high vacuum, cleanrooms, low vibration, thermal stability, or micron-level positioning and alignment.
- Knowledge of precision motion stages, actuators, kinematic mounts, and measurement instruments.
- Experience with finite-element analysis, prototype validation, acceptance testing, and commissioning at external facilities.
- A practical, detail-oriented approach with ownership from design through operational handover.
