The HL-2M tokamak is a midsize research tokamak designed to study high performance plasmas. Key areas of focus in the design are heating, control, diagnostic and advanced diverter configurations which are relevant to ITER.
It is a modification of the HL-2A tokamak but given the major changes it is essentially a new machine which will reuse many subsystems from HL-2A (which itself was a built from components of the ASDEX tokamak).
The HL-2m is expected to begin operation in 2020.
