Fusionality, which builds real-time diagnostics, plasma control, and data systems for fusion machines along with simulation tools to validate them, has announced a CHF 3 million (roughly $3.7 million) pre-seed round co-led by Founderful and Playfair. The company is a spinout of EPFL's Swiss Plasma Center in Lausanne, and says its systems are designed to be reused across devices with little customization, so each deployment costs less than the last. Co-founders Federico Felici and Jonas Buchli met on the EPFL and Google DeepMind collaboration that trained a reinforcement learning agent to control EPFL's TCV tokamak, published in Nature in 2022. The round will fund hiring and the company's first customer engagements. Open roles are listed at fusionality.com/careers.
Fusion's supply chain is usually described in terms of hardware, but a measurement and control layer has been forming alongside it. The Fusion Energy Base supply chain directory lists 16 companies under plasma diagnostics and 7 under control software. Only two appear in both.
