Borealis Fusion is a private fusion company founded in 2026 and based in New York.
It is developing proton-boron-11 (pB11) fusion in a confinement architecture derived from the tandem mirror, with the goal of producing the lowest-cost firm electricity from any source. The company selected pB11 for the plant it allows: no tritium breeding, no helium-3 sourcing, no breeding blanket and neutron output far below deuterium-tritium, at the cost of more demanding plasma conditions.
The five co-founders are Damien Scott (CEO), Ian Ochs (CTO), Elijah Kolmes, Tal Rubin and Alex Glasser; four previously worked at Princeton University on pB11 research supported by ARPA-E and DOE-FES and have authored a substantial body of theoretical work on pB11 and related plasma physics. The company grew in part out of the Astera Institute’s 1¢/kWh Fusion Energy initiative, an open-science program led by Scott with Rubin as physics lead.
