High Temperature Superconductors, Inc. (HTSI) was formed in 2019 with the goal of building a best-in-class manufacturing facility for high-volume production of ReBCO HTS wire / tape to meet fusion customers’ demands. HTSI was founded by Ray Karam and Berkeley Johnson. In 2020, HTSI completed the acquisition of manufacturing equipment and selected intellectual property from Superconductor Technologies Inc. (STI). The company has raised $40 million to date and secured a $5 million ARPA-E award from the U.S. Department of Energy in 2023 to develop a high-speed pulsed laser deposition (PLD) manufacturing process that aims to increase REBCO tape production by five to ten times while improving tape quality and reducing cost for fusion applications
