Affiliate Spotlight: New Mexico Innovation Hub

We sat down with David Perez, Founder and CEO of the New Mexico Innovation Hub, to talk about the fusion ecosystem taking shape on his midtown Santa Fe campus. Anchored by Woodruff Engineering and Liberty Fusion, the Hub filled 70,000 square feet in about five months and is already pre-leasing 75,000 square feet of new high-bay lab space built for fusion supply chain companies. Perez also makes the case for New Mexico, pointing out that Los Alamos National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratory are within 40 miles, and there is a $74B+ sovereign wealth fund with a mandate to back advanced energy, among other available state incentives.

Commonwealth Fusion Systems has announced roughly $1 billion in new funding, its largest round since the $1.8 billion Series B in 2021, bringing its total raised to about $4 billion. The round is anchored by sovereign wealth funds, pension funds, and infrastructure and industrial partners rather than the venture capital behind earlier rounds, a shift CFS attributes to the progress of SPARC, which CEO Bob Mumgaard says is roughly 80 percent built. The new capital is going entirely toward ARC, the company's first commercial power plant, which is in permitting with Dominion Energy engaged on the Virginia site.

Three more companies have joined the supply chain directory and built out their pages since our last issue. MARU L&C, based in South Korea, manufactures the deposition systems used to produce second-generation high-temperature superconducting tape. smolsys, based in Switzerland, offers "Plug&Produce" tritium handling container labs and listed itself across four categories (detritiation systems, fuel measurement, tritium compatible pumps, and tritium storage), and added its tritium high vacuum valves to the product directory. Aperture Optical Sciences, based in the US, a manufacturer of precision optics for high energy lasers, is now listed under specialty optics.

Established listings are growing too. VAT Group, supplier of vacuum valves, claimed its page and gave it a full overhaul: a complete company profile, nine locations worldwide, and its leadership team, on top of its existing valve, vacuum feedthrough, and seal categories. Morgan Advanced Materials added three more product categories (ceramic-to-metal seals, vacuum feedthroughs, and silicon carbide), and Daedal Systems added its jobs page and now shows four open positions on the Fusion Energy Base jobs board.
