Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has ordered more than 10,000 km (3 GA-m) of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tape from Fujikura Ltd. of Tokyo. CFS says it is the largest single HTS tape order to date. The tape will be used for the magnets of ARC, CFS's first fusion power plant, targeted for grid connection in the early 2030s.
The order is roughly twice the tape in SPARC, the pilot plant CFS is assembling in Devens, which holds about 1.5 GA-m. Under the long-term agreement, Fujikura will expand its manufacturing capacity to deliver the new order.
CFS Chief Science Officer Brandon Sorbom described the order as the start of buying the pieces of ARC, with construction set to ramp up once SPARC reaches Q>1. The order follows CFS's $1 billion raise in July, which the company said would go entirely toward ARC, including its supply chain.
