Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) is developing fusion energy systems which utilize high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets. CFS is currently building SPARC, a tokamak with the stated goal of achieving scientific breakeven. After SPARC, CFS plans to develop and build ARC, an electricity producing fusion pilot plant. In addition to these efforts, CFS is a supplier of HTS magnets to other organizations.

Description

The ARC tokamak concept was created by the team at MIT that founded Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS). For operation, the ARC tokamak will make use of high temperature superconducting magnets.

The goal of the ARC fusion device is to serve as a commercial, compact power plant for the electrical grid. CFS currently aims to have the first ARC power plant up and running by the early 2030s. The first ARC location has been announced for Chesterfield County, Virginia.

SPARC

Description

SPARC is a high-magnetic-field tokamak which will utilize high-temperature superconductor (HTS) magnets. Its stated goal is to become the first tokamak to achieve energy gain. SPARC is not designed to generate electricity, rather it will be used as a stepping stone to the first ARC which is intended as an electricity producing fusion power plant.

SPARC is anticipated to begin operation in 2027.
