In March 2026 we took our first look at trends in fusion hiring, using about eight weeks of data. Now we have nearly nine months to analyze. We track jobs from 58 fusion and fusion-related organizations, crawling their job boards several times a day, and since late January 2026 we've catalogued 3,083 unique positions. There have been some new trends and so a new article is in order.

Openings are up by 32% since March

Stacked area chart of active fusion job listings by organization from January to October 2026, rising from about 560 to about 820.

As of October 14, there were 817 open positions on our board, up from about 620 in mid-March. Only about 24 of the roughly 200 new openings since March come from organizations we started tracking after our March article. Counting only the organizations we were already tracking, openings still rose 28%.

In mid-September there was a dip, and then a rebound with Commonwealth Fusion Systems, Xcimer Energy, and others increasing their hiring with more than 110 net new openings in three weeks, the fastest rise since we started tracking.

Who's hiring now?

Commonwealth Fusion Systems has the most open positions, 120, more than triple its count in March. Helion Energy, which led in March, lists 68, about half its March level. Xcimer Energy has roughly quadrupled to 54, followed by Proxima Fusion (52), Thea Energy (52), and the UK Atomic Energy Authority (45).

What disciplines are in demand?

Bar chart of open fusion jobs by discipline in October 2026, led by physics, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering.

As in March, physics is the largest single category (131), but mechanical and electrical engineering together (225) outnumber it, with manufacturing (78) and technician (77) roles close behind. We changed how we categorize jobs in June, so these numbers aren't directly comparable with March's.

How long do job postings stay open?

In March we said it was too early to measure this, but now we can.

Bar chart of the median number of days a fusion job posting stays open, by discipline, from 21 days for legal roles to 62 days for lasers and optics.

The typical fusion job posting stays up for about six weeks. Legal, project management, and communications postings come down fastest, in three to four weeks. Lasers and optics, manufacturing, and electrical engineering postings stay up longest, close to two months.

A note on listing your jobs

Inclusion on the Fusion Energy Base Jobs Board is currently free. If your organization contributes to fusion and has a website listing fusion-related jobs, we want to include you.

To check if we list your organization's jobs:

Visit our jobs board and search for your organization in the field labeled "Organization or Keyword". If your jobs don't appear, send us an email with a link to your jobs page and we'll take it from there.

For organizations that want more visibility:

Our Affiliate program gives you a job listing priority placement at the top of fusionenergybase.com/jobs, along with an affiliate badge, a published interview, and more. Affiliates' open positions are the first thing candidates see when they come looking for fusion jobs.
